About

Hi there, I’m Emily. Welcome to my corner of the internet.

I write. I run. I read. I play.

I tell sad stories, funny stories, random stories, and more sad stories. I write about grief, family, creativity, sobriety, and mental health. I make spelling mistakes and typos.

I believe reading is a sure path to empathy and, like Joan Didion,

“I write entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see, and what it means. What I want and what I fear.”

Welcome to EmilyKathleenWrites.com I’m glad you’re here.

Story

I have a pile of sad stories. So many that I’m starting to sound like a Dolly Parton song. I write them down because it hurts more to hold them inside. I think my stories are pretty good, but telling a story without knowing why, or the ultimate meaning, or what I learned, just becomes a story of “what happened.” I’m not yet sure why I want people to know my story, but I am open to finding out.

I created EmilyKathleenWrites.com as a personal chronology of my struggles and triumphs so that one day I might look back and say, “Damn, I went through some shit, but in the end, it was all worth it.”

Abridged Bio

Emily lives and writes in Santa Barbara, CA with her husband and two children.

She spent eight years volunteering with Postpartum Education for Parents facilitating numerous New Parent Discussion Groups and serving on the PMAD Panel. She served on the board as Director of Spanish Services, Director of Training, and Director of PMAD Support. In 2017 she helped to launch Together We Heal A Walk For Wellness with PEP. This is a local event aimed at raising awareness and reducing the stigma of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. We raised money to support local mental health resources.

In August of 2019, Emily’s 17-moth-old son, Aiden was diagnosed with ATRT, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. He died unexpectedly during surgery on November 12th, 2019. For a long time, she couldn’t write about it, but now she wants the whole world to know his story.
