It’s Too Early For This

The other day on the way to school my oldest son turns to me and says, “What is real?”

“Kind of deep for 7:58 in the morning isn’t it?”

“But what is it?” he says, not letting it go.

“I guess real is what is happening right now. What comes before or after is your imagination.”

“But how do you know now is really happening?”

This is one of those times I wish I had a loading circle on my forehead so I had the time to come up with a good answer.

“I don’t know buddy, but I like that you think about it.”

The longer I’ve been a parent, the more I realize that it’s the small moments that loom large. Our talks on the drive to and from school, snuggles at bedtime, playing cards while on vacation. These are the moments they will remember.
